Frescobol was born in 1945 on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, when a local named Lian Pontes de Carvalho carved the first wooden paddle by hand. The name comes from Portuguese, meaning simply "fresh ball," and that lightness has never left the game.
Two players, two bats, one rubber ball. The only goal is to keep the rally going for as long as possible. No points, no opponents, no winners. Just partners. A shared heritage
In 2015, Rio de Janeiro officially recognized frescobol as intangible cultural heritage, placing it alongside bossa nova and samba. A game for all ages, all levels, and any open stretch of sand.
